Robert Smith has a winning streak going.
Last week, Smith said he “finally got the pieces put together” to make his car run great.
This week he won his second straight feature, topping a 20-car field of International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) SportMod racers at Merced Speedway.
Merced drivers held off visitors, with Ryan Larimer and Darren Thomas on Smith’s rear bumper straight to the finish line. Harley Turner of Los Banos repaired damage from a skirmish in his qualification heat race to take fourth.
Kyle Wilson was fifth.
The coveted outside pole position in this Saturday’s (August 10) Vern Willhoite Memorial Hobby Stock feature event was grabbed by Shane Hausmann. He joins Atwater’s Marshall Weaver in the front row of the special feature on the night the speedway honors its legendary drivers.
Hausmann held off fellow Merced resident and veteran driver Lester Beavers. Down a lap from a flat tire, Beavers worked his way all the way back to the second spot at the fall of the checkered flag.
Dick Webb of Fresno, another veteran driver, finished third. Young gun Kevin Joaquin of Sonora was fourth. Hobby Stock division point leader Andrew Krumm finished fifth and saw his lead shrink to 15 points over Joaquin.
Hausmann also won the Valley Sportsman feature, where he walked away from the rest of the field. Rickey Thatcher of Mariposa battled Hausmann’s dad, Mike, to take second. Following third place Mike Hausmann was Turlock’s Jeff Bristow.
Robert Dias topped Street Stock point leader Roy Hart, Jr. in the division’s feature event.
The “King of the Hill” battle saw Bubba Nelson beat Ramie Stone in the best of three – three lap races. Ryan Larimer’s car broke a ball joint in the competition, handing the win to point leader Matt Sotomayor.
Racing continues this Saturday night with the Vern Willhoite Memorial for Hobby Stocks. Also part of the program will be Valley Sportsman, Super Stocks and Mini Stocks.
Admission will be $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and $5 for children. The family four-pack is $28.00. Merced Speedway is located in the Merced County Fairgrounds, 900 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way in Merced, Calif.
